Description
Dry Barrier Mix (DBM) is a proven, innovative material developed to replace traditional barrier bricks and alumina bedding in electrolytic reduction cells. Initially introduced as a bedding material, DBM has demonstrated significant performance benefits, including a 20% to 30% reduction in cryolitic consumption and substantial thermal insulation improvements. Smelters using DBM report a 300°C to 500°C reduction in shell bottom temperatures, contributing to meaningful power savings and enhanced pot longevity. With over 3,000 reduction cells operating globally—many exceeding 3,000 days in service—DBM has consistently shown technical success. Its effectiveness is attributed to its reaction with cryolitic vapors and liquids, forming a stable, viscous barrier that minimizes bath penetration and preserves material integrity. DBM is compatible with most reduction cell designs and exhibits excellent long-term stability below the freezing isotherm. The product has a shelf life of 12 months from the date of manufacture and must be stored in a moisture-free, covered environment.
